Museo del Prado and the Japanese media group Yomiuri Shimbun sign collaborative agreement
he Museo del Prado and the Japanese media group Yomiuri Shimbun have signed a collaborative agreement relating to the organisation of the exhibition Goya: light and shade. Masterpieces from the Museo del Prado. It will be held from 22 October 2011 to 29 January 2012 at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo. This is the third exhibition that the Prado has held in Japan in collaboration with Yomiuri Shimbun, the most important media group in Japan.
The exhibition will be curated by Manuela Mena, Chief Curator of Spanish 18th-century Painting and Goya at the Museo del Prado, and José Manuel Matilla, Head of the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Museum. Once again, the Museum will bring an important group of works to Japan, on this occasion comprising a significant selection of paintings, drawings and prints by Francisco de Goya, the artist most fully represented in the Museum and among those most admired in Japan. The exhibition will also include various works that belong to the host museum, the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo.
This event falls within the Museum’s “International Prado” exhibition programme. It will enable the Museum to establish even closer links with Japanese society, which has always shown itself particularly interested in the Prado’s collections. This is evident in the fact that Japanese visitors are always among the three nationalities that most visit the Prado from abroad, sharing the top positions with North America, Italy and France, according to studies carried out in recent years.
